Centre for Clinical Investigation & Therapeutics
A state of the art facility is slated for construction that will enhance the clinical and translational research capability in London. This facility will foster collaborative clinical
research via citywide access to intellectual and physical resources needed to conduct cutting-edge translational clinical research. It will house leading experts, nursing staff and
infrastructure that will ensure the best possible clinical studies can be carried out. Its mandate will be to systematically grow and support investigator initiated translational
clinical research.
One important technology that will be made available through the Centre is that of state of the art equipment needed for measuring drug levels. Recent improvements
in bioanalytical detection technologies, in particular mass-spectrometry (MS), has provided investigators the ability to measure drugs with far greater sensitivity compared to
instruments available only 5 years ago, to the point that drug levels can now be assayed from just a few drops of blood obtained from a simple pin prick, from small volumes of
saliva or even from a few hairs. These types of capabilities are then expected to result in a better understanding of the pharmacological basis for genetic and environmental
determinants of drug action or toxicity. Expected opening is slated for 2010.
